Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Graduation

Congrats! Class of 2020

Congrats Class of 2020!

You did it!

You trained relentlessly and tirelessly. You found your passion for the specialities that you’re pursuing, made an impact on the patients you cared for, and refined your skills,.

You did all of this while a pandemic upended our world and pressed you into service unexpectedly.

Your time at Michigan Medicine prepared you to rise to challenges, and we’re confident that you’ll handle whatever the future throws at you with grace, skill and professionalism.

In such and unprecedented year of challenges, some of the most important accomplishments have been those of the chiefs. I’ve received countless compliments from faculty and staff regarding the culture created by Drs. Baker, Carver, and Sayre, which has permeated all that has been accomplished this year. They have gained our utmost regard and respect for the aplomb with which they have maintained themselves and led the team of residents. We would like to convey our gratitude. Your leadership has changed us and will be remembered long after you have left.
Dr. Alzharani has been a wonderful addition to our team this year and extends our longstanding history of excellence among the Oral/Head & Neck Oncology fellows. He has been an absolute pleasure to work with and is ever respectful, caring of patients, expert in his surgical skills, hardworking and a team player, especially amidst the recent COVID-19 challenges. He was on track for handling record numbers of complex cases and leaves us unquestionably ready for his next step as a surgeon. We are absolutely proud to add his name to the respected list of those who have completed this fellowship at Michigan Medicine.

Brent Ward, DDS, MD

Congratulations to Dr. Andrew Baker, Dr. Karen Carver, and Dr. Kelly Sayre who graduate in June 2020 from the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Program! These individuals have stood out as collaborative, level-headed leaders and educators particularly through a chief year constrained by a limited workforce and the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Baker, Dr. Carver, and Dr. Sayre are the embodiment of teamwork and are role models for their peers. They are also the first class in the history of the Michigan OMFS residency program to all pursue fellowship training.
Dr. Baker will be heading to Portland OR to complete a fellowship in Head and Neck Oncologic and Microvascular Surgery at Providence Cancer Institute. Dr. Carver will join the team at Boston Children’s Hospital where she will pursue a fellowship in Cleft and Craniofacial Surgery. Dr. Sayre will complete a fellowship in Head and Neck Oncologic and Microvascular Surgery at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Andy, Karen and Kelly: The OMFS team is extremely proud of your growth and accomplishments throughout your time at the University of Michigan. We look forward to following your careers going forward and wish you the best in your future endeavors!

Justine Moe, MD, DDS
