One of the first programs of its kind, our Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency prepares you to succeed in academic vascular surgery with a broad clinical foundation and protected time for academic and research pursuits.

Residency Highlights

Our residency offers:

  • Extensive experience in open and endovascular cases, with a near-equal distribution of volume.
  • Three diverse clinical training sites. The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System for experience with routine vascular surgery; St. Joseph Mercy Hospital, a high-volume community surgery setting; and Michigan Medicine, a large academic medical center drawing diverse and complex cases from around the country and the world.
  • Exposure to all aspects of vascular surgery. Our 9 operating surgeons represent all aspects of the specialty, from common vascular procedures to specialized practices such as complex cerebrovascular reconstructions, advanced open reconstruction of the thoracic and abdominal aorta and visceral branches, advanced endovascular procedures, thoracic outlet syndrome decompressions, and pediatric vascular procedures. It’s not unusual for our residents to return from a national conference having amazed their peers with the caseload and case diversity at Michigan.
  • Two years of protected and funded academic development time between the third and fourth clinical years — a rarity among vascular residency programs that provides a valuable opportunity to round out your training with basic, translational, and health services research, publications and presentations, and leadership development.
  • A record of excellent outcomes, including a 100% vascular surgery QE and CE pass rate and graduate placements in sought-after positions.

Ultimately, our goal is to graduate skilled vascular surgeons who go on to continue our specialty’s legacy of innovation, go on to advance the care of vascular patients and who enjoy long and fruitful careers in academic vascular surgery.

Program Overview

Clinical Experience

Our program dedicates 5 clinical years to progressive training in vascular surgery, leading to primary certification in vascular surgery.

Highlights include:

  • A multidisciplinary approach to aortic, peripheral vascular, and venous disease.
  • Exposure to all facets of vascular surgery, including more niche pursuits.
  • Access to the nationally renowned Frankel Cardiovascular Center, a 425,000-square-foot, $215 million facility with 24 vascular general/moderate care beds, a 24-bed surgical post-procedure ICU, and 11 dedicated cardiothoracic and vascular ORs.

Integrated Vascular Surgery Residency Rotations

Rotation Key

  • Academic Development Time: Dedicated research time occurring during PGY-4 and PGY-5 years
  • Core Surgery General: Encompasses experiences on several different general surgery services. Experiences will be in the areas of colorectal surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, minimally invasive surgery, bariatric surgery, and surgical oncology.
  • Core Surgery SICU: Surgical intensive care unit service at UM hospital
  • Core Surgery Thoracic: Thoracic surgery service experience at the UM hospital and Cardiovascular Center
  • Core Surgery Transplant: Transplant surgery service at UM hospital, includes inpatient care as PGY-2 and donor runs, kidney transplants, and access cases as PGY-3
  • Core Surgery Trauma/Burn: Acute care surgery service and burn unit experience at the UM hospital
  • Core Surgery VA: Combined general surgery and vascular surgery experience at the Ann Arbor Department of Veteran Affairs Medical Center
  • DVU Superficial Venous: Hybrid “clinically light” rotation that emphasizes the care of superficial venous disease and diagnostic vascular lab training/reads (self-study) for RPVI preparation
  • Elective: Time spent to further augment vascular training
  • Hem-Onc C/S: 2-week rotation on Hematology-Oncology consult service at UM hospital
  • Multidisciplinary CVC Clinics: Multidisciplinary PAD clinic (outpatient) rotation at the UM Cardiovascular Center
  • Vascular CVC: Core vascular surgery rotation at the University of Michigan (UM) cardiovascular Center
  • Vascular Endo: All endovascular cases on service at the UM Cardiovascular Center
  • Vascular Offsite: Vascular surgery experience at an offsite
  • Vascular SJMH: Local community hospital with robust vascular surgery practice, including outpatient endovascular suite
  • Vascular VA: Vascular Surgery service at the Ann Arbor Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center

Our program provides 2 years of protected and funded academic development time between your third and fourth clinical years.

Highlights include:

  • Access to the Section of Vascular Surgery’s robust research enterprise, including the endowed 4,900-square-foot Conrad Jobst Labs, where researchers from across the section share knowledge and central resources to accelerate discovery.
  • Connections to the Department of Surgery's research communities, such as the Center for Healthcare Outcomes & Policy, which offers a collaborative space for those pursuing outcomes research.
  • Bimonthly teaching conferences that draw on curriculum developed through an NIH-sponsored program in academic vascular medicine and are attended by faculty, fellows, General Surgery residents, and colleagues from the departments of Radiology and Internal Medicine.
  • Excellent NIH and DOD funding in the areas of venous thrombosis, vascular trauma, epigenetics/wound-healing and peripheral arterial disease.
