Training & Education

Home to the first teaching hospital in the U.S., the University of Michigan is a place where medical education has always been integral to our mission of improving human health in service of a life well-lived.

At the U-M Department of Surgery, you’ll learn from a team of more than 100 faculty who are leaders not just in their clinical or research specialty, but also in surgery education.

This commitment to education shows in the breadth and quality of our graduate medical education programs, as well as our outreach starting at the high school level, where we engage the imaginations and skills of young Detroiters in the Doctors of Tomorrow program.

Surgical Education Research

We are committed to training surgeons who are the leaders and best. Our department has dedicated resources to substantially inform and update the existing educational system for the next generation of surgical trainees. The Center for Surgical Training and Research (CSTAR) focuses on continually evaluating and updating elements of training, such as assessment, curriculum development, recruitment, leadership development, and faculty development. Additionally, CSTAR’s cross-disciplinary programs work to bridge the gap between surgical education research and health services research to address issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in surgical education and apply formal quality improvement (QI) methodologies to ultimately set new national standards for surgical trainee performance.

The Michigan Center for Global Surgery

The Department of Surgery provides opportunities for faculty and trainees to engage in global surgery projects through the Center of Global Surgery. These projects focus on global health education, world health policy and research, and international surgical care. In addition to faculty-led global surgery projects, we have recently introduced an International Research Rotation for residents and an Introduction to Global Surgery course for medical students.
