Dr. Dupree Interviewed About Insurance Coverage for Fertility Care

Dr. Jim Dupree, Assistant Professor of Urology, was interviewed by the US Office of Personnel Management about infertility insurance benefits

Jim Dupree, MD, MPH was interviewed by the United States Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Healthcare & Insurance Program’s Benefit Review Committee on June 1, 2022, and July 6, 2022, about the impact of employer-sponsored insurance coverage for fertility care.

The Healthcare & Insurance Benefits Review Committee is evaluating the feasibility and impact of adding fertility coverage to the health insurance benefits for the over 8 million individuals enrolled in the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB) Program. Dr. Ron Kline, OPM’s Chief Medical Officer, invited Dr. Dupree to meet with the Healthcare & Insurance Benefits Committee to answer questions and share his perspective as a reproductive health services researcher who has evaluated the impact of fertility coverage at the University of Michigan (see Dupree et al, 2019) and as a urologist who specializes in the care of patients with infertility.

The University of Michigan has offered its employees a fertility care benefit since 2015, and the Healthcare & Insurance Benefits Review Committee also invited Brian Vasher (Senior Director for Benefits at the University of Michigan) and Karen Harville (Manager of Medical Benefits at the University of Michigan) to meet with the Healthcare & Insurance Benefits Review Committee on July 6, 2022, to discuss the University of Michigan’s experience providing a fertility care benefit for its employees in more detail.
