Steven L. Kunkel, Ph.D., one of five faculty to receive distinguished university professorship

Honor recognizes senior faculty with exceptional scholarly or creative achievements, national and international reputations for academic excellence, and superior records of teaching, mentoring and service

Senior Associate Dean for Research Steven L. Kunkel, Ph.D., is one of five faculty members to receive a Distinguished University Professorship (DUP), one of the University of Michigan’s top honors.

DUPs, established in 1947, recognize senior faculty with exceptional scholarly or creative achievements, national and international reputations for academic excellence, and superior records of teaching, mentoring and service. Each professorship bears a name determined by the appointive professor in consultation with his or her dean.

On Sept. 1, Kunkel will become the Peter A. Ward Distinguished University Professor of Pathology. He also is the Endowed Professor of Pathology Research and a professor of pathology in the Medical School.

The other recipients:

  • Deborah E. Goldberg, Ph.D., Margaret B. Davis Distinguished University Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. She also is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, LSA.
  • Laura K. Kasischke, MFA, Theodore Roethke Distinguished University Professor of English Language and Literature. She also is a professor of English language and literature and in the Residential College, LSA.
  • Jeffrey C. Lagarias, Ph.D., Harold Mead Stark Distinguished University Professor of Mathematics. He also is professor of mathematics, LSA.
  • Victor C. Li, Ph.D., James R. Rice Distinguished University Professor of Engineering. He also is the E. Benjamin Wylie Collegiate Professor of Civil Engineering, professor of civil and environmental engineering, of materials science and engineering, and of macromolecular science and engineering, College of Engineering.

Recently appointed DUPs are invited to give an inaugural lecture that highlights their work at the university.
