Timothy M. Johnson, M.D., is the Medical School’s senior associate dean for clinical affairs. He is responsible for executive leadership and oversight of the University of Michigan Medical Group — the operating unit of the U-M clinical enterprise that consists of all ambulatory operations and collaborates closely with the U-M hospitals. He works to develop, deploy and integrate clinical care with the research and educational missions of the Medical School.

Johnson received his medical degree and dermatology residency training at the University of Texas at Houston. After completing additional fellowship training in cutaneous surgery and oncology at the University of Michigan and the University of Oregon, he joined the U-M faculty in 1990 with appointments in the departments of Dermatology, Otolaryngology and Surgery (Division of Plastic Surgery). Since coming to the U-M, he has served as clinical director of the Multidisciplinary Melanoma Program, division chief of Cutaneous Surgery and Oncology, Mohs Ambulatory Care Unit director, and training director of the fellowship in micrographic surgery and dermatologic oncology.

His research is focused on integration of data and specimens with experimental models to identify molecular mechanisms of disease, as well as development of evidence-based strategies for better treatment. He has served as an investigator on grants, clinical trials, and numerous research activities. He established robust biorepository banks in melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer with linkable comprehensive clinical databases. His publication portfolio includes more than 235 original peer-reviewed manuscripts in top impact journals such as Nature, Nature Medicine, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Cancer Research, Nature Cell Biology, and JAMA and over 50 invited publications/book chapters.

Johnson has received many clinical, teaching, and research honors and delivered over 150 national and international invited and keynote lectures. He received the Medical School’s Outstanding Clinician Award in 2002 and the Presidential Citation from the American Head and Neck Society in 2012. Additionally, he has served on the board of directors or executive committees of several national and international organizations, was an invited founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guideline Committees for Skin Cancer and serves on the American Joint Committee on Cancer Staging.
