I'm MSTP — what's my agenda?
You’re invited to participate in an optional dinner with current MSTP fellows on Wednesday, April 18. On Thursday you will have the opportunity to attend DHE programming or MSTP events, or you can do a little bit of both! After breakfast, you have the option to meet with 1-3 selected research faculty members or attend the Diversity & Health Equity Day events. After lunch with MSTP fellows, you can choose between attending a social activity with MSTP fellows or attending the Diversity & Health Equity Day events, including a clinic visit. Thursday evening you will join the current fellows for dinner followed by an engaging social activity. Please fill out the SLW registration to indicate your preferences. The MSTP Office will contact you with further information and instructions for making your travel arrangements.
Where will I stay?
Some attendees stay in hotels and others stay with medical student hosts. While we try our best to provide a host for every person who lives outside the area, it is not always possible due to host availability.
We suggest you reserve a hotel room that can be canceled the week of Second Look. There are hotel suggestions on our Interview Day page.
What costs are involved?
At the point of registration, a refundable deposit of $100 will be collected through PayPal. We will refund your $100 if:
- You attend Second Look!
- You cancel your registration by Thursday, March 23.
All meals and activities are provided. You may want to bring a few dollars for miscellaneous items and social activities.
Can I bring guests?
While we understand there may be others who influence your medical school decision, it is difficult for us to accommodate guests. We appreciate your consideration. We do make an exception for spouses/life partners. If your spouse/life partner would like to come, please note this on the registration form — they are allowed to attend the social activities and all of Saturday's programming.
What is the appropriate attire for the weekend?
You will need business casual attire for Thursday and Friday. Comfortable dress shoes, slacks/skirt/dress, dress shirt and tie/blouse are appropriate. Expect to do some walking!
Casual attire is great for Saturday — all day! Jeans, sneakers, T-shirts and sweatshirts are all acceptable. Again, keep in mind we will be walking quite a bit, so please wear comfortable shoes.
Be sure to check the weather before you leave for Ann Arbor and pack accordingly.
Which events are mandatory?
None of them! You decide which events you want to attend. We will ask for some RSVPs when we need to order food, but other than that, you figure out your own schedule.
How do I get to Ann Arbor if I'm flying?
Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) is the closest airport — about 20 miles outside of Ann Arbor — so plan on an additional 30 minutes travel time to get here.
- Custom Transit: 734-971-5555
- AirRide: 734-707-7247. This is the least expensive shuttle option but requires that you walk from the shuttle stop(s) to our office.
Uber and Lyft are also available in Ann Arbor.
Taxi rides from DTW average around $60 each way.
- Yellow Cab: 734-663-8898
- Blue Cab: 734-547-2222
Are you coming from Chicago?
How do I get to and park at the Health System?
Here is a detailed map of the University of Michigan Health System campus. Click on any location to generate detailed directions. The Admissions Office is #14, Medical Science I — D wing.
You will need to park in Parking 2 structure (P2) when you arrive. Use our Interview Day mobile walking map, or print and bring this map to guide you to the Admissions Office (it's about a 10-15 minute walk through the complex). After 5 p.m., and all day Saturday, you'll be able to park in the parking structure or open lot at the corner of Zina Pitcher and Ann.
Can I explore housing options during my visit?
Those who are interested may participate in a housing tour on Saturday (a walking tour of the White Coat area which runs from 9 to 10 a.m. and then a bus tour of Kerrytown, Phi Chi, Phi Rho and Munger housing 10 to 11 a.m.). You'll be able to visit the most popular housing options and have the chance to see students' apartments. Friday dinners will also take place in student housing. Feel free to check out our housing information, which highlights med student favorites. If you need to set up apartment visits with realtors you are more than welcome to do so and adjust the activities that you attend for Second Look Weekend.
