Many early career faculty, unlike senior faculty, do not have the full resources to afford continuous biostatistical support. Likewise, career development award budgets don’t allow hiring the full amount of effort that might be required for a successful application and execution of the research plan.
To this end, the Caswell Diabetes Institute, in collaboration with the Department of Internal Medicine, will provide biostatistical core support through the Department of Biostatistics in the School of Public Health to early career investigators planning to submit diabetes, obesity, or complications-focused career development awards (e.g., NIH K, VA CDA, foundation CDAs) who need to incorporate biostatistical support within their applications, especially for proposals that have clinical and health outcome components to their proposals. Examples of areas of biostatistical support include:
- Formulation of research hypotheses and aims
- Design of studies, including outcomes, interventions and study populations
- Analyses of preliminary data for inclusion in the grant application
- Sample size or power calculations
- Statistical analysis plans for the grant
There will be a rolling application process, but specifically for career development awards that are being worked on, the deadline for requested support will be 2 months before the due date (e.g. for the February 5, 2022 submission, the deadline for that specific application will be December 6, 2021).
Applicants will be expected to include some support (e.g., up to $5000 annually) in their non-salary budget of their application as cost share of the biostatistical support.
The Department will provide this resource for up to 3 years, and will re-evaluate this investment based on usage and success of this new program.
