Biography

Jenny M. Shao, MD, FACS is a Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of the Abdominal Hernia Program at the University of Michigan. Dr. Shao is a graduate of Washington University in St. Louis and Indiana University School of Medicine. She completed her general surgery residency at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital and a minimally invasive surgery fellowship at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center. She is certified by the American Board of Surgery.

Dr. Shao is a recipient of the Association of Women Surgeons Top 40 Under 40 award and is involved as a committee member in several national organizations including the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), American Hernia Society (AHS), and serves on the Board of Directors for the Society of Surgical Ergonomics. She is the Vice-Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and an inaugural recipient of the American College of Surgeons anti-racism grant aimed at improving healthcare equity and developing surgical leadership programs focused on DEI.

Dr. Shao’s clinical research is focused on improving patient outcomes and perioperative care in abdominal wall reconstruction and benign foregut surgery. Her academic interests center on implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.
