Diabetic neuropathy in children and youth: New and emerging risk factors

Review Summary:

Children with diabetes can develop neuropathy. Although most have type 1 diabetes, there is a recent increase in the number of children developing type 2 diabetes due to a greater prevalence of childhood obesity. Therefore, more children with diabetes may also develop neuropathy, making it necessary to identify risk factors and implement optimal screening and diagnostic measures to prevent complications. Ideal management strategies will also be necessary to control blood glucose and other risk factors for neuropathy, such as obesity. This review summarizes the current state of knowledge on neuropathy in children with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and outlines future directions.
