Shervin Assari, M.D., selected as a Center for Healthcare Research & Transformation policy fellow

Shervin Assari, M.D., has been selected as a 2018 Center for Healthcare Research & Transformation (CHRT) policy fellow. The CHRT mission is transform research and evidence into actionable policy and program approaches to advance health care delivery, the health of the population, and access to care.

In today’s highly polarized political environment, the CHRT Policy Fellowship at the University of Michigan is unique. It brings together Republican and Democratic policy makers with health services researchers to learn about policy-making, health services research, and the intersection between the two from seasoned experts—and from each other. Over four months, fellows meet in Ann Arbor for seven day-long, seminar-style presentations on public health policy and current issues affecting health policy and practice in Michigan and nationally.

During the year, Dr. Assari will meet with policy makers in Detroit, Lansing and Washington D.C., build connections, share knowledge and gain a greater understanding of the policy-making process and how to impact upon it.

Says Dr. Assari:

“I am really honored to have been chosen as a 2018 CHRT Policy Fellow. Participation in this policy program will equip me with the tools to have constructive conversations with policy makers from both parties. It will give me first-hand experience, which is extremely important, given my interest to impact public policy. This is invaluable for people like me who study politically charged topics such as race, poverty, and welfare. I am looking forward to this very exiting ‘learning by doing’ training.”
