Summary

Precision Health (PH) at the University of Michigan is a presidential initiative that engages researchers across the entire campus in precision health discovery, translation, implementation, and policy research. PH welcomes applications for the position of Data Analyst. This position will contribute significantly to the Tam Precision Health & Bipolar Collaborative and will focus on creatively integrating the numerous diverse clinical assessment measures and research data collected over the past 15 years from participants within the Heinz C. Prechter Bipolar Research Program. The candidate will adapt and advance tools created within Precision Health at U-M with the ultimate goal of improving the care of people with bipolar disorder and allow researchers across the University and beyond to mine the trove of mental health clinical assessment data in combination with other medical, social and geographical data contained within the University. This work is transformational in terms of the future of mental health research and the future of our understanding of bipolar disorder.

The scope of the project associated with the position includes the opportunity to map, standardize, harmonize and analyze diverse data to create a specific ‘Use Case’ affecting the outcome of care for patients with bipolar disorder. It will include the design and management of databases, dashboards, cloud-based solutions and the verification of data measures to ensure data quality, security and appropriate stewardship.

Thinking in terms of abstraction, modularity and reuse is a major advantage, along with a forward-looking mind-set of a focus on the immediate problems with the vision optimized for future flexibility across all human conditions. The ability to think in terms of efficiency, sustainability, pursuing automation and reducing points of failure and human error is an advantage. We are seeking someone who thrives on being a team member and thought partner. The ability to think from the user perspective and challenge the team to think about impact and design solutions is an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and lead innovative solutions for data analytics in quality, accessibility, shareability, security and stewardship.
  • Design, build and integrate various public and private datasets and databases via SQL Server, ORACLE, MongoDB database management.
  • Build Use-Case data sets and analytics for research projects and presentations.
  • Create ad-hoc data analysis reports, as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Bioinformatics or related field with at least 3 years experience working in the informatics field.
  • Must have proven expertise in SQL, R, Python performing data analytics and visualization.
  • At least 2 years of academic data science or data analytics experience.
  • Strong attention to detail and concern for information accuracy with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team effectively in a multicultural and collaborative environment.
  • Strong organizational, presentation and written communication skills.
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills including emotional intelligence, self-management, priority management, tact, and diplomacy.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience configuring and deploying applications using Amazon Web Services.
  • Experience connecting R and Python for data science and statistical analysis to associated web application framework (e.g.: Flask/Django, RShiny or Rails)
  • Experience with data development operations (ETL, API integrations, etc.…).
