General Policies

Vacation

Each resident is allotted four weeks of vacation time per year with a maximum of one, two week block. Vacation times are organized by chief residents with final approval by the Program Director. Switching vacation requires advance notice/approval by Associate PD.

Moonlighting

Moonlighting is not specifically prohibited but is strongly discouraged by all the Urology faculty and specific standards for performance are in the House Officer Association (HOA) contract. Approval by PD is required.

Residents are allowed to moonlight pursuant to the HOA employment agreement. The Department of Urology strongly discourages moonlighting for the following reasons:

1. The Urology training program at the University of Michigan is a very rigorous but rewarding experience and moonlighting during training could significantly contribute to resident limitations in work hours and increase the risk of fatigue and its attendant risk to patient and resident well-being.

2. Moonlighting has the potential of creating a unbalance between urologic training (the primary and most important reason for choosing this career path) and non-medical outside interests.

All residents are required to complete and submit the “Notification of Extracurricular Medical Practice” form annually to the Program Director informing the PD of their intent to moonlight or not.

Residents opting to engage in moonlighting must submit the “Notification of Extracurricular Medical Practice” form to the PD prior to engaging in moonlighting activity. A resident who chooses to moonlight must be cognizant that their primary responsibility is to their urology residency training. During their moonlighting activity the resident must do the following:

1. Maintain duty hour logs via MedHub

2. Update their surgical logs weekly

3. Have all dictations and charts completed and up to date weekly

4. Attend all educational conferences

5. Display evidence of continued progress in both clinical, surgical and research endeavors.

6. Be up to date with all mandatory learning modules via Mlearning

7. Achieve and maintain an inservice score in the 75th% or above.

Residents may not moonlight if:

1. They are on probationary status

2. Demonstrate behavior consistent with fatigue

Surgical Logs

A critical component of resident training is careful monitoring of operative experience. The evaluation of a training program requires confirmation of sufficient volume and variety of surgical cases done by the resident. Accurate record keeping by the institution for number and types of cases is essential; similarly the resident must document personal experience in all cases done (including all cystoscopic and minor outpatient cases, TRUS, and biopsy). The resident record keeping will be monitored quarterly to ensure accurate and complete figures. Residents completing the program must provide to the Program Director a complete listing of cases which must be signed by the resident and Program Director and sent to the Residency Review Committee (RRC). Documentation of completion of residency will not be available until final signed OR Logs are submitted to the Program Director.

In 2000, the Urology RRC implements direct entering of resident log data via the Internet. This system will be a substantial improvement over previous manual systems.

The importance of accuracy and completeness of the surgery log cannot be overemphasized. Individual resident teaching and variety and volume of experience provided to residents is an important benchmark by which our program is evaluated. At least yearly, Dr. Hafez and resident mentors will review the surgical logs with each resident individually to ensure appropriate progress.
