The Pediatric Urology Fellowship provides an opportunity for those who have completed a urology residency to specialize in pediatric urology, working with all members of the Division of Pediatric Urology at the University of Michigan. This ACGME-approved fellowship consists of one year of clinical focus followed by two years of clinical research.
Clinical Year
The clinical year of the pediatric urology fellowship offers exposure to all clinical aspects of pediatric urology. The breadth of pediatric urologic diagnoses seen at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital ranges from more common conditions such as undescended testis to rare congenital anomalies such as bladder exstrophy. The focus of the clinical experience will be on mastering surgical procedures with emphasis on outpatient and inpatient care. Our fellows are afforded a well-rounded training experience, with exposure to commonly performed outpatient procedures (inguinal hernia repair, orchiopexy, hypospadias repair); endourology; microscopic varicocelectomy; minimally invasive surgery; and complex genitourinary reconstruction. The fellow is responsible for working with and teaching University of Michigan residents on service as well as attending weekly didactic conferences.
Research Years
The pediatric urology fellow will spend two years collaborating with mentors in the Dow Health Services Research Division and the Division of Pediatric Urology at the University of Michigan. An NIH T-32 training grant supports funding for clinical research and graduate coursework in pursuit of a master’s degree. A total of 20% of time in the third year of fellowship will be devoted to independent clinical practice at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, including outpatient clinic and operative procedures.
