Dr. Monica Dus is sworn in as White House Fellow on September 20, 2023

But here’s the icing on the cake. On September 20, Dr. Dus was appointed as White House Fellow to the Honorable Carlos Del Toro, Secretary of the Navy.

White House fellowships are an honor bestowed on “exceptional young leaders” with a record of remarkable professional achievement. It is a nonpartisan program that fosters and strengthens leaders for the betterment of our communities and nation and is a year-long, full-time commitment.

“I’m working as a special assistant to Secretary Del Toro,” said Dus. “I interact closely with his amazing team and Navy and U.S. Marine Corps representatives. It’s a wonderful experience, and I’m learning so much.”

As a Fellow, Dr. Dus works with senior White House Staff, Cabinet Secretaries, and other top-ranking Administration officials on challenging issues under the guidance of Sec. Del Toro. She will gain first-hand experience working at the highest levels of the Federal government and leave the Administration equipped to serve as a better leader.

How does Dr. Dus feel about stepping away from teaching classes and her lab work?

“I miss the lab, colleagues, and teaching, but I know 12 months will go by quickly. I can’t wait to share with our community all I learned from the fellowship educational program, the Department of the Navy, and the 14 amazing people in my cohort.”
