Kevin K. Tremper, Ph.D., M.D., Professorship in Anesthesiology

The Kevin K. Tremper, Ph.D., M.D., Professorship in Anesthesiology will celebrate and further the groundbreaking achievements its recipients have made — and it will facilitate discovery that will change the course of care.

The Need

The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Michigan is a leader in the advancement of patient care, research and medical education. We promote the highest standards of safety and comfort for patients, and we are inspired by the passion and skill of our physicians, scientists, and professionals who are finding solutions to the most vexing medical challenges.

With a diverse research funding portfolio across federal, state, and industry sponsors, we are unrelenting in our search for new technologies and treatment methods that will offer the best care for our patients. Furthermore, with one of the largest residency training programs and alumni bases in the nation, we are shaping the future of perioperative anesthesia care. Now, many who spent their formative years in our department serve as leaders throughout the country with broad-reaching impact.

Today, we must consider how we can personally impact the future. Like so many before us, we have an opportunity to open doors for others who will follow.

Although we are the top-funded anesthesiology department by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), many groundbreaking innovations require early seed funding before they are supported by more traditional sponsors. That’s where your support is crucially needed.

The Vision

Professorships are critical to attract and retain faculty who are highly regarded investigators, caregivers and educators. This funding vehicle enables remarkable scientific minds — those who build their careers at the University of Michigan and those who seek to join our team — the autonomy to make transformational contributions to medicine.

The establishment of the Kevin K. Tremper, Ph.D., M.D., Professorship in Anesthesiology will grant its honoree the critical access to resources needed to continue to conduct important clinical research in anesthesiology and surgical outcomes.

This patient-centered clinical research will directly impact the point of care: it will advance our understanding of patient recovery after surgery, the use of advanced analytics and machine learning to help clinicians make more informed decisions, and enable pilot clinical trials evaluating fundamental anesthetic choices.

Aligned with strong leaders of the past — among them Dr. Tremper, chair, 1991-2019 — the holder of this professorship will continue to make Michigan Medicine a place where the most interesting and important questions are answered. The work will directly impact the care we provide at the bedside.

The Opportunity

Every day, we strive to improve and save lives, and philanthropic contributions help make our efforts possible. Professorships position us to recruit and retain the best and the brightest, benefiting our program for generations. Your investment in professorships helps remove financial barriers to our pursuit and brings us closer to realizing our goals, while maintaining unsurpassable patient care.

Dr. Tremper is the past president of the Society of Academic Anesthesiology Chairs, the Morton Society, and the Association of University Anesthesiologists. His reputation for extracting opportunity from challenges created an environment of possibility and progress. His encouragement of high-risk, yet strategic approaches spurred the recruitment of top-tier faculty and trainees who were hungry to make an impact.

The Kevin K. Tremper, Ph.D., M.D., Professorship in Anesthesiology will celebrate and further the groundbreaking achievements its recipients have made — and it will facilitate discovery that will change the course of care.
