Biography

In 1993 Dr. Desmond joined the University of Michigan faculty in the Department of Surgery, Section of Emergency Medicine.  During his time in the department he has served as Service Chief and Associate Chair for Clinical Operations. Dr. Desmond led a number of process and quality improvement efforts in the Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Desmond’s research interests focused on the application of operations management principles to healthcare and specifically the Emergency Department.

In 2011 Dr. Desmond became Associate Chief of Staff in the Office of Clinical Affairs and served in that role until 2013 when he was appointed the first Director of Clinical Quality for the Health System.  In this senior level quality management role, Dr. Desmond was responsible for developing processes for identification, prioritization, implementation and communication of clinical quality and patient safety improvement initiatives. 

In 2015 Dr. Desmond was named the Chief Medical Officer for the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers and the University of Michigan Medical Group.  In this roll he provided senior executive leadership for safe, high quality, effective and efficient medical care delivery across the health system and its partners and affiliates.  He was also responsible for ensuring medical care was consistent with the mission and vision of the clinical enterprise through collaborative interaction with other Health System leaders and facilitates provider interaction with hospital administration and the governing board.
