Oxycodone pills treat pain but carry the risk of addiction. A new drug, tested in animals, worked like an opioid painkiller but was not addictive. This week, Thomas Joaquin Fernandez described a process for designing opioid-like drugs that would act on pain receptors in the brain while blocking the receptors responsible for fostering dependence and building tolerance.
