Dr. Hornyak has been with the department since 2001 is a Professor on the clinical track. He completed his medical and rehabilitation medicine training at the Medical College of Ohio/University of Toledo, and a pediatric rehabilitation fellowship at Michigan. Dr. Hornyak is well-known nationally for his work with rehabilitation in neuromuscular diseases and Down Syndrome. His PhD is in exercise physiology, and his current research deals with physical activity, specifically martial arts, and individuals with Down Syndrome. Dr. Hornyak serves on the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPM&R) Evidence-Based Practice Committee and other national committees. He is a well respected educator, winning the department’s Silver Crutch award 4 times and serving on the steering committee for the University of Michigan Academy of Medical Educators. He is also a medical school leader for IPE. Dr. Hornyak is currently the inpatient director for pediatric rehabilitation and the ACU medical director for the pediatric rehabilitation centers. He suceeds Dr. Virginia Nelson, who served in this role with distinction for many years.
