Peking University delegation visits PM&R

On 3/20/24, Michigan Medicine PM&R hosted a delegation of PM&R leaders (chief physicians and deputy chairs) from Peking University Health Science Center (PKUHSC), China. We spent a day of thoughtful conversations, facilities tours and exploratory discussions that position us for potential academic collaborations. Clinical, research and educational leaders exchanged experiences from both countries and institutions. Our guests toured one of our adult inpatient rehabilitation units, our Burlington outpatient clinic, and the Neuromuscular and Rehabilitation Robotics (NeuRRo) Laboratory. Our faculty opened conversations around our programs for Chronic Widespread Pain, Neurogenic Bowel, Sports Medicine, Cerebral Palsy & Pediatric-Onset Disability, Cancer Rehabilitation and Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Peking University guests included Dr. Mouwang Zhou (Chief Physician & Professor). Dr. Yanyan Yang (Associate Chief Physician), Dr. Cui Wang (Associate Chief Physician), Professor Qiudan Sun (Professor, Office of International Cooperation), and Mr. Yuan Liu (Deputy Chief, Office of International Cooperation).

University of Michigan participants included Drs. Nitin Jain, Andrea Aagesen, Cody Andrews, Rita Ayyangar, Angeline Bowman, SriKrishna Chandran, J.T. Eckner, Sandra Hearn, Edward Hurvitz, Claire Kalpakjian, David Kohns, Chandramouli Krishnan, Adam Lewno, Aarthi Manjunathan, Buddy Naber, Gianna Rodriguez, Sean Smith, Seth Warschausky, Cory Wernimont, and Sally Young

Michigan Medicine (MM) has a strong, collaborative academic partnership with Peking University. Since 2010, we have shared the Joint Institute for Translational and Clinical Research, which fosters and supports the collaborative research that neither side could conduce alone. The Joint Institute has funded 77 collaborative research projects with a co-principal investigator model, resulting in over $55 million in grant funding. The PM&R Department is grateful to Global REACH director Dr. Amy Huang for arranging and supporting the visit, and look forward to future communications.
