Since this past summer, Dr. Shumer has participated in the New England Journal of Medicine’s special panel of chief residents from other family, hospital and internal medicine residency programs around the country. The panel blogs on a range of clinical issues from the resident’s point of view.
Dr. Shumer’s most recent post is a personal examination of life lessons that have helped him out in his medical career and help him fight physician burnout. It is an encouraging piece where he notes, “I thought back to those childhood lessons on the importance of perseverance. Instead of giving up, I decided instead to dig in and work harder, because I remembered why I entered medical school in the first place — my dream of becoming a primary care physician. “
