Great Lakes Games

Track athlete, Maddy Gustafson, competes in the 2021 Great Lakes Games

Although many track and field meets had to be cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19, on May 20-23, 2021, the Great Lakes Games were held in Milwaukee, WI. Athletes ranging from age 8 to 69 years old participated in many events, such as powerlifting, swimming, track and field, archery and air rifle.

One University of Michigan student traveled to compete in the Great Lakes Games: Madeline (Maddy) Gustafson, a first-year student in LSA. She ran both the 100- and 200-meter dash races. Although Maddy has been involved in sports and fitness pursuits her whole life, the Great Lakes Games were Maddy’s first race she ever competed in. Maddy stated, “the atmosphere was incredible!  Everyone there was so supportive and encouraging. The competition was friendly and motivating.” Over the three days of races, Maddy was able to observe and engage with many other athletes competing in their races. “Interacting and engaging with all the athletes at the Great Lakes Games was a little intimidating at first. There was a girl there who had competed in the paralympics games in Rio in 2016. Once the ice was broken, I fit right in.” Athletes of all skill levels competed in these races which creates an inviting environment for everyone there.

While Maddy has a lot of experience running the 100-meter dash, this was Maddy’s first time running the 200-meter dash. She was very happy with her results and remarked, “both the 100- and 200-meters were over just as soon as they began. It was fast-paced.” As this was Maddy’s first time running the 200-meter dash, she said it was “a little daunting, but a joy nonetheless.”

Most athletes progress every season. Maddy plans to work up to competing in the 400-meter dash and train to get her 200-meter to be under 40 seconds. Maddy also plans to start training for field events such as the long jump and the javelin. Maddy was a great athlete to join the program this year and can not wait for what is to come!
