After earning his Bachelor of Science from the University of Connecticut, Dr. Figueroa went on to complete his education at the University of Michigan Medical School and the University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine, earning both his Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Dental Medicine. Throughout his education, he developed an interest in treating pathology of the head and neck via surgical approach, which continues to be cultivated at the University of Michigan Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery residency program.
Throughout his academic career, Dr. Figueroa gained an interest in craniofacial anomalies and regenerative sciences. This led him to conduct research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. He also has a profound interest in public health, stemming from his experiences at Columbia University and the Centers for Disease Control where he evaluated health outcomes of low-income communities.
Dr. Figueroa is especially passionate about mentorship within surgery and healthcare disparities. These interests continue to fuel him via his engagement on the Executive Committee of the Resident Organization of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ROAAOMS), mentoring programs for underrepresented minorities seeking involvement in OMS, and in the community of Detroit, where he engages in a variety of mentorship programs for youth interested in dentistry and medicine.
Clinically, his interests include head and neck oncology, craniofacial surgery, orthognathic surgery, and facial esthetic surgery.
