Position Overview

The University of Michigan’s Department of Psychiatry is home to the oldest Anxiety Disorders Clinic in America.  It has had two long-serving Directors in its 43+ year history, and now seeks a candidate with interest and capacity to become its third Physician Director.   This clinic has been a clinical, scientific and educational pillar within our Ambulatory Services throughout its history.  It has been delivering state-of-the-art care, both psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacological, since its inception and has been continuously contributing to the scientific study of anxiety and its treatment.  We now seek an experienced Anxiety expert, able to lead a large, academic treatment and training clinic and to support the program’s ongoing scientific success.  We will prioritize Tenure Track applicants but will consider Clinical Track candidates with strong academic credentials.

This program is currently clinical home for 2 faculty psychiatrists, 6 faculty clinical psychologists, 5 staff social workers and nurse practitioners, and up to 8 trainees (psychiatry residents, social work fellows, and post-docs and practicum students in clinical psychology).  We also provide a clinical science home for 4 tenure track faculty (MD and PhD) with multiple R and K level grants.  We have been intensely inter-disciplinary since inception and seek a leader who can actively promote our egalitarian approach to collaborative work, both clinically and scientifically.

We seek someone with leadership capacity, and interest and skills in both research and clinical care, but the balance can be adapted to individual strengths.  Specific interests can focus on any or all of the anxiety disorders (and, yes, we still consider OCD and PTSD to be anxiety disorders), and research foci can involve neuroimaging, psychoneuroendocrinology, genetics and genomics, sleep, clinical trials (using meds and/or psychotherapy), health services research, and substance abuse (all areas in which the department has existing expertise and willing collaborators and mentors).

This position will initially report through the outgoing Anxiety Clinic Program Director (Jim Abelson, MD, PhD, who has run the Program for 25 years, following 18 years of leadership by George Curtis, MD), but will ultimately report clinically through our Ambulatory Service Directors and scientifically through our Research Associate Chairs.

Clinical, Educational and Scientific Activities

The preferred candidate, in addition to a central clinical and administrative leadership role, will also have some level of involvement in direct clinical care delivery, supervision of psychiatry residents in Anxiety, support for trainees in all disciplines, didactic teaching, and scientific work.  The precise distribution of effort between clinical, research and educational activities is open to negotiation and impacted by research funding.

All of our physician faculty members also provide a small amount of hospital-based clinical services, including scheduled weekend rounding on our inpatient unit (averages 2-3 times per year) and telephone back-up to our residents doing night call in our Psychiatry Emergency Services (6-7 nights per year, from home).

Michigan Medicine seeks to recruit and retain a diverse workforce as a reflection of our commitment to serve the diverse people of Michigan and to maintain the excellence of the University. We welcome applications from anyone who would bring additional dimensions to the University’s research, teaching, and clinical mission, including women, members of minority groups, protected veterans, and individuals with disabilities. The University of Michigan is committed to a policy of nondiscrimination and equal opportunity for all persons and will not discriminate against any individual because of race, color, national origin, age, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, disability, religion, height, weight, or veteran status.

Required Qualifications

Applicants must hold MD or DO degrees and have completed a psychiatric residency.  We are seeking someone with leadership experience who can qualify for an appointment at the University of Michigan at an Associate or Full Professor level, but will consider earlier in career candidates who can demonstrate clear readiness to step up into a leadership role.  Success in research funding procurement is a plus, as is demonstrated promise for an academic career that spans research, clinical care, teaching and administration.  Superior clinical competencies and master teacher skills are desired.  Applicants must be board certified or board eligible in Psychiatry.  Possession of a license to practice medicine in the State of Michigan is required before on-boarding can be completed.
