What you should know when you call:

  • When you call for the first time to schedule an appointment, our staff will ask you a series of questions and gather other necessary information to ensure we provide the care most appropriately matched to you or your child’s situation.
  • Please have your insurance card available at the time of your call so that we can obtain preliminary information. Due to the variability of insurance policies, it may be helpful for you to contact your insurance company ahead of time to verify your benefit coverage.
  • As part of the scheduling process, you will also be asked whether you would like to hear about research opportunities. We have many studies currently recruiting participants. Some studies offer compensation and several offer treatment during the course of the study. Learn more.
  • The University of Michigan Department of Psychiatry offers inpatient and outpatient clinical services. Healthcare professionals from a broad range of clinical backgrounds dedicate their unique skills and expertise to treating patients during critical periods of need for psychiatric care.
  • Please note that our services are mostly evaluation and consultation services. This means that we provide you with an assessment/evaluation & treatment recommendations.
  • We then provide options as to where you can receive the recommended care. This is often to resources outside of Michigan Medicine Psychiatry. You or your ongoing care provider may request documentation from your evaluation to assist in your continued treatment; please call (734) 936-5490 for medical records.
  • Care within our Psychiatry clinic may be offered on a case-by-case basis. Factors that affect our ability to offer continued treatment include our clinicians’ overall caseload availability, and also whether or not our clinic model is a good fit for the care you need.
