Meet the Fellows

Karina Drake, MD 2016-2017

Dr. Drake graduated from Albany Medical College of Union University in New York in 2012. She then completed her adult psychiatry residency at the University of Michigan, where she served as a chief resident during her last year of training. Dr. Drake is currently completing the one-year Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program. After graduation, Dr. Drake will become a faculty member here at the University of Michigan splitting her time between inpatient work and ECT.

Lauren Gerlach, DO 2015-2017

Dr. Gerlach graduated from Western University of Health Sciences in California and completed her residency training in psychiatry here at the University of Michigan where she served as chief resident. Dr. Gerlach is currently completing a 2-year fellowship combining both clinical and research components.  She was drawn to geriatric psychiatry due to the overlap between medicine, psychiatry, and neurology that is inherent in treating older adults with mental health and cognitive disorders. She has found that the wisdom, life stories, and resiliency shown by her patients and their families are the most rewarding part of her work. Her clinical interests include treatment-resistant depression, neuromodulatory treatments including electroconvulsive therapy, and resident and medical student education. Research areas of interest include trends and appropriate use of psychotropic medications among older adults, factors that influence treatment adherence in late life depression, and the impact of depression treatment in development of dementia.

Swapnil Rath, MD 2015-2016

Dr. Rath graduated from Rajiv Gandhi Medical College, India. His interest in geriatrics was instilled through his formative years in India, where the culture respects elders and treats them as important members of society. The biopsychosocial model of medicine practiced in American psychiatry led him to complete his General psychiatry residency from University of Kansas School of Medicine and St. Mary Mercy Hospital, MI. His interest in geriatric psychiatry was instilled through a PGY1 rotation and being selected as a 2013 GMHF Honors Scholar at the AAGP Annual meeting. The interface of medicine, psychiatry and neurology in the field of Geriatric Psychiatry is most appealing to him. Dr. Rath loves teaching, working in multidisciplinary teams and has special interest in the pharmacological and non-pharmacological management of patients with dementia. Dr. Rath is also interested in the use of mind-body interventions for positive aging. After graduation from fellowship, he will be working as a clinician-educator on an Inpatient Older adult unit in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

The University of Michigan Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship Program has been an ACGME-accredited program since 1994.  The program has successfully graduated 31 fellows over the years, who are now working in private practice or affiliated with academia.
