How to Apply

Thank you for your interest in the Psychiatry Residency Training Program at the University of Michigan. Please review the following material carefully prior to submitting your application.

Eligibility

Applicants must complete an M.D., D.O., or equivalent medical degree prior to the start date of the residency.

Applicants must show evidence of academic excellence, clinical interest in the field of psychiatry, a high level of professionalism, high ethical standards, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, potential for successful completion of the residency program, and potential for the practice of medicine within the U.S. healthcare system by the following:

Graduates of LCME or AOA accredited medical schools:

  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation (dean’s letter) attesting to these qualities;
  • Passage of USMLE Step 1 within 3 attempts;
  • Passage of USMLE Step 2 CK and CS within 3 attempts.

Graduates of non-LCME or -AOA accredited medical schools:

  • At least 1 letter of recommendation based on no less than 1 month of formal clinical training in an LCME or AOA accredited medical school or ACGME accredited training program attesting to these qualities (n.b., observer and physician assistant positions do not qualify)
    or 
    Performance of a significant amount and quality of research or clinical work beyond that required for graduation from medical school (e.g., residency program, PhD program);
  • Passage of USMLE Step 1 within 3 attempts;
  • Passage of USMLE Step 2 CK and CS within 3 attempts.
  • Applicants must be eligible for medical licensure in the state of Michigan.  Candidates must have graduated from a medical school found on the California approved list; affiliation with a school on the approved list is not sufficient. The list may be found at: http://www.mbc.ca.gov/Applicants/Medical_Schools/Schools_Recognized.aspx.
  • Foreign applicants must be permanent residents, eligible for a J-1 visa sponsored by the ECFMG, or hold a current H-1B visa (n.b., Michigan Medicine does not sponsor H-1B visas).

Applications are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) for all open positions regardless of year of training. Applicants must register with the National Residency Match Program (NRMP).

  • 3 Letters of Recommendation authored within 2 years of the start date of the residency program

  • If you are an international medical graduate, please include a copy of your ECFMG certificate

PGY-II and above:

  • ERAS On-line Application
  • Personal Statement
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Medical Student Performance Evaluation (Dean’s letter)
  • 3 Letters of Recommendation authored within 2 years of the start date of the residency program
  • Letter of recommendation from your former training director
  • Medical School Transcript
  • USMLE Step 1 and 2 scores
  • If you are an international medical graduate, please include a copy of your ECFMG certificate

Selection Process

  • Decisions regarding candidate selection for the program are made by the Residency Selection and Evaluation Committee, based on the applicant’s academic record; clinical, research, and other work experience; letters of recommendation; interviews with departmental faculty, house officers, and other staff; and demonstration of personal characteristics that may be pertinent to training in and the practice of psychiatry.
  • Applicants who meet program requirements will be considered for interview with departmental faculty based on the number of interview slots available and their academic competitiveness with other candidates.
  • Following interviews, the Selection and Evaluation Committee will review candidates’ application materials and comments of faculty, house officers, and staff who have interacted with the candidates to assess their potential for the program.
