Mind Matters - Addiction Treatment Medications: The Science & Personal Stories

Webinar highlights medications for treating substance use disorders and personal stories of recovery

On January 18, 2024, we hosted Mind Matters - Addiction Treatment Medications: The Science and Personal Stories, a webinar featuring experts from U-M Addiction Treatment Services (UMATS).

George Cameron Coleman, Jr., M.D., presented on the various medications commonly used to treat substance use disorders, highlighting their importance in a recovery plan. He was joined by Rebecca, a person in long-term recovery from substance use disorder who utilized medication-assisted recovery through UMATS. Rebecca shared her own incredible story of recovery, a journey which has led her to pursue a bachelor's degree in social work and give back to the community through her work at Home of New Vision where she coordinates the Recovery Opioid Overdose Team.

Despite many success stories like Rebecca's, there is still a great deal of stigma and shame around seeking medication-assistant treatment. Together, these two presenters showed how crucial medication is as part of a good treatment plan, serving as a powerful tool to help facilitate long-term recovery and—most importantly—save lives.
