Current Fellows

Year 1

Matt Hazle

Matthew Hazle, MD

Med School: University of Louisville

Residency: Nationwide Children’s Hospital

Personal Hobbies and Interests: Fun fact – I was a Latin American / Latino studies major in college and taught English in Madrid for a year before med school. I’m a firm believer you’re never too old to play Pokémon! Whether it’s the gym, HIIT classes, or running, I love staying active. New York City is my favorite place to getaway, especially Greenwich Village. Once we learned I’d matched here, my husband and I have both been excited to explore Michigan’s natural beauty!

Why I chose the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program at the University of Michigan: I wanted to train at a large academic medical center in a progressive city, and I was interested in some of the programs available for trainees through the University / medical center. During my interview day, I was struck by how warm, friendly, and supportive everyone in the division was – I felt welcomed right away!

Alex Blumer

Alexandra (Alex) Blumer, MD

Med School: Drexel University College of Medicine

Residency: University of Michigan

Personal Hobbies and Interests: Spending time with friends and family, cooking new "Half Baked Harvest" recipes, traveling, and Peloton classes

Why I chose the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program at the University of Michigan: Having completed my residency at the University of Michigan, I knew Mott was a great place to complete training, but it's the people, both within the PHM department as well as in other groups, that make this a truly special program!

Year 2

Dr. Costa

Amanda Costa, M.D.

Med School: Ross University School of Medicine

Residency: Salah Foundation Children's Hospital/Broward Health Medical Center

Personal Hobbies and Interests: Traveling, reading and running

Why I Chose the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program at the University of Michigan:

I found at UM everything I was looking for in a fellowship program. UM is a place where I felt the faculty would be an extended family for me.  A program that would give me an excellent balance between autonomy and support for my transition after residency.  I believe the program not only will give me necessary skills to become a proficient hospitalist physician, but will also give me the necessary opportunities to grow academically by exposing me to amazing research opportunities.

Dr. Wyderko

Michael Wyderko, M.D.

Med School: Central Michigan College of Medicine

Residency: Indiana University

Personal Hobbies and Interests: Michigan and Buffalo Bills football, obstacle course racing, playing board games, and making my own bagels.

Why I Chose the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship Program at the University of Michigan:

From the very beginning everyone was so welcoming and nice. It felt like one big family, which even came across on a virtual interview day.  The program also offered so many options to help expand my career whether it be in global health, research/QI, medical education, or even admin.  I knew this program would set me on the road to become the most successful PHM physician possible while being in a welcoming environment!
