Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

We, the members of the Department of Pediatrics at Michigan Medicine, are committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion and are united against any forms of racism, discrimination, and injustice in our community.

We stand for diversity, equity and inclusion.  This is an explicit part of our departmental structure.  We are committed to the benefits that diversity brings to the fabric of our department, across staff, trainees and faculty.  We believe that combining different perspectives and fostering diverse approaches to strategic thinking is critical to our success. We work with professional organizations of groups that have been historically under-represented in medicine, like the National Medical Association and the National Hispanic Medical Association, to increase our diversity in both faculty and trainees.

We are committed to providing an open and welcoming environment in which we commit to providing our faculty, staff, and trainees with the opportunity to advance and lead. To achieve this, we provide implicit bias training and engage heavily in consciousness raising within our department. We work to ensure that individual barriers are identified, addressed, and eliminated. We strive to ensure that all individuals are empowered to reach their highest potential.

As a Department of Pediatrics, we believe that all children must grow and develop in a world that prizes their individual dignity and does not create systemic barriers that impede their success. We work to eliminate racism and inequity and promote health for all children.
