Why Train in Pediatrics at Michigan Medicine?

The educational programs at the University of Michigan Department of Pediatrics offer a comprehensive exposure to primary care, tertiary care, and subspecialty pediatrics.  Balance is the core principle of our educational philosophy; our aim is to train superb pediatricians who will be prepared to lead in whatever career path they choose—primary care practice, academic medicine, subspecialty care, or research.

Our firm commitment to education, and the breadth of our Departmental, Health System, and University resources, allow us to offer our residents, fellows and medical students nearly limitless choices and opportunities to precisely tailor their experiences to their own individual interests and for their own future plans.

A growing number of Michigan Medicine off-site locations, as well as partnerships and joint ventures with other institutions, extend the range of training options both regionally and internationally.

The University of Michigan offers highly competitive salaries and tremendous benefits to our residents/fellows.  An overview of salary, benefits and employment eligibility is available on the GME Office website, under “Prospective Residents/Fellows.”

Pediatric Residency Program

The goal of our Residency Program is to offer outstanding and balanced training that prepares our graduates to assume leadership positions in pediatrics.  Our faculty in the Department of Pediatrics is comprised of world leaders in the care of children as well as in pediatric education, pediatric health services and research. We train our graduates to become leaders by ensuring that their residency experience includes training in teaching, advocacy, health services, evidence-based medicine, cultural competence and ethics. Opportunities are available for those who wish a more thorough grounding in research, and a new advocacy elective gives interested residents hands-on and in-depth experience with policy development and the legislative process.  After graduation, our residents are successful in all career paths.

We are fortunate to recruit extraordinary residents to train with us at the University of Michigan. Here, they find a caring and supportive environment where teaching and learning are the highest priority.

Combined Residency Programs

The Department coordinates and administers two interdisciplinary residency programs

Fellowship Programs

Our department offers several fellowship programs in many different subspecialties. These programs offer a foundation of excellent clinical training with many unique experiences for fellows. Research opportunities abound and range from basic science to health services research.

Medical Student Clerkship

Our department also provides outstanding education opportunities to our medical students. Our largest commitment is to the required third year Pediatric Clerkship. We provide a broad and balanced rotation for students to see children of all ages, diagnoses, and complexity in a variety of inpatient and outpatient settings. There are several unique educational opportunities, including a case-based student morning report and an EBM teaching program. We are consistently rated as one of the top clerkships among all of the required third year clerkships. We provide abundant clinical opportunities for fourth year students in electives and sub-internships. We accept visiting fourth year externs from other medical schools as space permits.
