Clinical Rotations

pediatric clinical rotations

Below is an outline of the rotations that residents complete during each year of training (not taking into account vacation time). We operate on a block schedule; each residency year consists of 13 four-week blocks, and each resident has 4 weeks of vacation per year.

House Officer I

  • Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics (1 block)
  • Inpatient Pediatrics (5.5 blocks)
          - Inpatient rotations include either two week or one-month blocks on teams that contain both general pediatrics and subspecialty patients. Subspecialty inpatient services include cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, genetics, hematology/oncology, nephrology, neurology, pulmonology, and rheumatology.
  • Newborn and Delivery Room (1 block total - split into two 2-week blocks)
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (1 block)
  • Night Team (1 block total - split into two 2-week blocks)
  • Pediatric Emergency Department (1 block)
  • Pediatric Surgery (1 block)
         - This outpatient rotation includes rotation through the general and subspecialty surgical clinics. Interns will also spend one week with pediatric anesthesiologists practicing procedural skills, including but not limited to IV placement, bag-mask ventilation, laryngeal mask airway placement, and endotracheal intubation.

House Officer II

  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (1 block)
  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (1 block)
  • Hematology/Oncology Senior Resident (0.5 blocks)
  • Night Team (1 block – split into two 2-week blocks)
  • Inpatient Second Year Rotations (1 block)
         - Second year residents spend four weeks honing their skills as autonomous providers through the roles of “day senior” and “PM admit senior” assisting the inpatient teams with hospital admissions during times when coverage improves inpatient flow and resident work load
  • Pediatric Emergency Department (1 block)
  • Outpatient Adolescent Medicine (1 block)- Call Free
  • Pediatric Community Health and Advocacy (1 block)
  • Electives (4 blocks)
       -  All elective months are call free months
  • Inpatient Senior Experience (1 block – split into two 2-week blocks)

House Officer III

  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (1 block)
  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (1 block)
  • Inpatient Senior Resident (2 blocks)
  • Night Team (1 block – split into two 2-week blocks)
  • Pediatric Emergency Department (1 block)
  • Pediatric Community Health and Advocacy (1 block)
  • Electives (6 blocks)
        - All elective months are call free months
